Barreirinhas is on the coast of the State of Maranhão, 252 km from the capital, São Luís. The city is known for being the gateway to the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, a paradisiacall region formed by the contrast between dunes and lagoons.

The city is part of the Rota das Emoções (Route of Emotions) and is located on the perimeter of the Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses (Lençóis Maranhenses National Park), which also includes the cities of Primeira Cruz and Santo Amaro. The park is on the banks of the Preguiças River, a large river that originates in the interior of Maranhão state and is lined by mangroves and dunes.

You can take a relaxing boat ride by river to discover the natural beauty of its banks and take baths in shoals and sandbars. During the tour, Farol de Mandacaru ( Mandacaru lighthouse) is certainly worth stopping at, as it offers breathtaking panoramic views.

Besides an area of 155,000 hectares and dunes that reach peaks of up to 50 m, the National Park also has blue and green lagoons. The best known, and with the best conditions for bathing, for both adults and children, are the Bonita and Azul lagoons, which are accessible by 4x4 vehicles or boat. They are highly sought by those who want to rest after long walks on the sand under the strong Maranhão sun.
