Jijoca de Jericoacoara is located on the far west coast of the state of Ceara, some 300 km from the capital city, Fortaleza. The municipality is house to the famous Jericoacoara beach, nicknamed Jeri, internationally known as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Jericoacoara preserves clear and fresh water lagoons, beaches of white sands and dunes that go on for miles with unobstructed view, and mangroves that complete the formula to make this place a true heaven on Earth.

In this preserved paradise, there are no lampposts on the streets. The moon and stars are responsible for the light that charmingly bathes the place. There is no asphalt either. Feet on the sand and the energy that comes from this combination lead the way through the city. The region attracts visitors from all over the world, adding a cosmopolitan flare to what used to be a simple fishing village. The allure is such that many foreign visitors end up moving there.

How to get there

Jeri has now a local airport, but with a limited number of flights. The best option is to land on Pinto Martins Airport, in Fortaleza. There you can rent a 4x4 vehicle to go to Jijoca.


Where to stay


Jericoacoara can offer you many choices, from the cheapest inns to the most luxurious hotels. There are many cozy hostels in the village, especially on Forro, Sao Francisco, Principal and Dunas streets.


Cuisine

The local and international cuisines blend in the multiple lodging choices. You can either stay in the sophisticated inns or in the house of a fisherman, which would give you a more authentic experience. There you can enjoy fresh seafood, warm tapiocas, an invigorating açaí or even a pizza.

Sports and beaches

Strong and constant winds make it an ideal location for practicing water sports such as sailing and kitesurfing. Especially in July and August the winds attract visitors from all over the world to practice those sports.

Within a 25 km reach you will find Tatajuba, a delightful set of beaches, dunes and ponds. You can also go to the Mangue Seco Beach, landlocked between the dunes and the mangrove, where you can take a boat trip and observe the seahorses in their natural habitat.

Another trip you do not want to miss is the one to Pedra Furada, an opening in a rock formation that, during the winter solstice, lets the sun shine through the crack sculpted by the sea force. It is truly spectacular!

You will also want to watch the dawn breaking from the top of the Por do Sol Dune, a sight so beautiful it is always applauded. At night, Jeri is fueled by the sounds of forro, rock and samba, bringing together tourists and locals.

Road (bus)
You can take a bus from Fortaleza to the town of Jijoca de Jericoacoara.

Bus stations in Fortaleza: Fatima, Antonio Bezzerra and Messejana.
Personal or Rental Vehicles
You can rent a 4x4 vehicle in Fortaleza and take the CE-085 highway. It is approximately a four-hour trip, and it is advisable to take a local tour guide with you.

On foot
Walking through Jeri is an intense and pleasurable activity. You can visit the entire village and enjoy the beauties along the way.
