A multicultural metropolis, Porto Alegre is the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul and was colonized by several European nations. Due to this mixture, it was founded on the basis of a rich history and a culture with secular traditions, “peculiar” food, and clothing and accents very particular to the South of the country.Sitting 120 km away from Serra Gaúcha, Porto Alegre is the gateway to several trendy Southern destinations such as Gramado, Canela, and Bento Gonçalves. Even if you go to some of these places, it is worth reserving time to enjoy the tourist attractions that the capital offers too. There are more than 50 museums and memorials, 13 cultural centers and more than 30 theatrical spaces, in addition to environmental preservation areas.

The center of the city is where most of the historical and cultural tourist attractions are found. You can visit, for example, the Metropolitan Cathedral, inspired by the Italian Renaissance style, the Gasometer, a former thermo power station that has become a cultural center, and the Memorial of Rio Grande do Sul, with a large collection on the history of the state and wine tasting sessions of the gaúchos (regional) wine. The Casa de Cultura Mário Quintana is also a must-see attraction. Throughout the center, you can shop at Rua da Praia and walk along the Guaíba River enjoying the sunset.

If you like beautiful landscapes, Porto Alegre is one of the most woodland covered cities of the country. The huge Farroupilha Park is one of the favorite spots of gaúchos (people born in the South region of Brazil) for social engagement, leisure and for playing sports.

In Cidade Baixa you find most of the bars, nightclubs, and restaurants. Speaking of food, the gaúchobarbecue is famous throughout the country. But there is nothing more emblematic of the people of the south than chimarrão, a hot beverage made from yerba mate and the pine nut (Which forms the base of many local recipes) served in a gourd cup, .

Porto Alegre is one of the cities where Brazil will amaze and surprise you in every detail. It is worth the visit!
