A multicultural metropolis, Porto Alegre is the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul and was colonized by several European nations. In Cidade Baixa you find most of the bars, nightclubs, and restaurants. Speaking of food, the gaúchobarbecue is famous throughout the country. But there is nothing more emblematic of the people of the south than chimarrão, a hot beverage made from yerba mate and the pine nut (Which forms the base of many local recipes) served in a gourd cup, .
