In the late 17th century a fortress was built to protect the city of Altamira from invaders. Its elevated position was strategic to observe the outsiders arrival. The enemies did not show up and the fortress lost its usefulness until it was completely dismantled.
Mirante Square was built in the same place of the fort, taking advantage of its prime location and its panoramic view over the city and Xingu River. A better and nicer view you can see at the top of the tower in the middle of the Square.
The place has been totally revitalized and today has an excellent infrastructure to all visitors: children's playground, sport courts, outdoor gym and restrooms.
