On the banks of Xingu River, the Bishop of Santarém Armando Bahlmann ordered to build the Sagrado Coração de Jesus parish in 1911. It worked until 1939 when gave way to the Cathedral which became the most important church of the city of Altamira, state of Pará.
The construction of Belo Mont plant, near Altamira, brought a great and fast development in the city. The Cathedral was also benefited. Its exterior has been restored as well its interior, which has become more comfortable and now is air-conditioned.
The church is located in a beautiful square, next to the waterfront, where you can delight with Xingu River landscape. Sé Episcopal da Prelazia do Xingu is the larges ecclesiastical circumscription of the Catholic Church in Brazil.
Cathedral has an important role in the region that goes beyond religious: its leaders are engaged in supporting movements of indigenous, ribeirinhas (traditional population in South America who lives near rivers) and rural communities.
